As we’ve pointed out in previous articles, trauma causes a disruption in the way we organize our inner lives. Essentially, it is an event that resists definition, and our minds will continue to come back to it until we find a way to express it. Art therapy offers alternative means to accomplish this. Music, painting, dance, and other forms of art all open new avenues by which we can release what we’ve been carrying for so long.

Finding Our Voice

It’s worth pointing out that art therapy is effective even when clients are untrained in the arts. In fact, these individuals may have an advantage over studied artists as they aren’t saddled with rules of form and technique. To clarify this point, let’s look at language. We communicate using everyday language, which follows rules of logic and form. Traumatic experience exists beyond these rules. Indeed, those of us with trauma in our histories have found that everyday language falls short when we try to express what has happened to us. However, if we try another, more artistic style of language – for example, poetry or automatic writing, where we’re free to create our own rules of logic, form, and expression – we may find the voice that has been eluding us.
