Suboxone Q&A

What are opioids?

Opioids are a class of drugs produced from the opium plant that affects the neurotransmitters in the brain. Your doctor may prescribe these medications, which include Vicodin®, oxycontin, and fentanyl, to help you manage pain. Heroin, which is an illegal drug, is also an opioid.

In addition to pain relief, opioids also cause a reaction in the brain that elicits feelings of pleasure and relaxation. This effect is what makes the drug so addictive. To continue experiencing pleasure, you need to take more and more of the drug.

Opioid dependence and addiction is an epidemic in the United States. Finding treatment to manage your substance use disorder can be difficult. The experienced team at Creative Care specializes in substance use and addiction, and has an opioid treatment program that includes the use of medications like Suboxone® to aid in your recovery.

What is Suboxone?

Suboxone is a prescription medication used to treat opioid addiction. The medication contains buprenorphine and naloxone, which work together to help reduce your cravings for the opioids and help you recover from your addiction.

Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist, which means it induces the pleasure effects associated with opioids, but much weaker. Additionally, once you hit a certain dose of buprenorphine it reaches its maximum effect, which means using more won’t increase the feelings of pleasure and helps prevent misuse of the medication.

The naloxone in Suboxone counteracts the effects of the opioid to limit your potential for usage disorders.

Is Suboxone safe?

Suboxone is very effective at helping you recover from opioid dependence. However, Suboxone itself is also addictive and may increase your risk of a relapse.

The team at Creative Care understands the advantages and disadvantages of Suboxone and offers a Suboxone program to help free you of all opioids.
