What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a disorder of the brain that alters your mood, energy levels, and ability to manage everyday tasks. If you or someone you love has bipolar disorder, you may experience:
- Shifts in mood, from elation to depression, referred to as manic and depressive episodes
- Intense emotions
- Alterations in sleep patterns
- Unusual behaviors
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mental health condition, but it doesn’t have to determine the course of your life. The experienced team at Creative Care provides treatment to help you manage your brain disorder and improve your quality of life.
What are the types of bipolar disorder?
The degree of your mood changes determines the type of bipolar disorder you have. The types include:
Bipolar disorder I
Bipolar disorder I is the most severe form of the mental health condition. With this type, you may experience a manic episode that lasts for a minimum of seven days, sometimes with symptoms so severe you require hospitalization. You also experience depressive episodes that may last two or more weeks.
Bipolar disorder II
With bipolar disorder II, you experience the same manic and depressive cycle as bipolar disorder I, but with less severe manic episodes, referred to as hypomania.
If you have cyclothymic disorder, you may cycle between hypomania and depression for a period of at least two years.
It’s also possible to experience the manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorder but not fall into any specific category. This type is referred to as unspecified bipolar.
