A Careful Listening & Observing Dual Diagnosis

Through careful listening and observing each individual, we diagnose what co-occurring disorders might be amplifying their addictions. What emerges is a customized yet clinically sound treatment plan that allows us to more effectively help our clients change their addictive behavior patterns. Together, we can deal with these underlying problems and sort out their causes and effects. By discovering the “why,” we reduce the chances that the client will relapse into a chemically dependent lifestyle. In addition to Drug and Alcohol Addiction we are experts in treating:

  • Personality Disorders
  • Mood Disorders
  • Depression
  • Bipolar Illness
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Psychiatric Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders

After Admission Detoxification & Psychiatric Evaluation

In order to consider undiagnosed psychological and neurological factors, traumas, and developmental history, our doctors meet with each client and their family to ensure a thorough clinical psychiatric assessment. During the initial psychiatric assessment, the client will receive medication management and a safe and compassionate detoxification.

Healing Your Relationship with Food through Nutrition Therapy

Our chef provides gourmet meals with each resident’s health and dietary needs in mind. While at Creative Care, clients can work with a registered dietitian to create a healthy plan focused on nutrition and exercise.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Horses are deeply emotional, intelligent beings. They mirror our inner emotional state and act out the feelings we consciously try to hide and the feelings we unconsciously defend. With the assistance of horses the therapist helps the client to identify patterns that block growth. The overall experience connects clients to their authentic selves and helps develop emotional intelligence. The work with horses is experiential and cathartic, triggering an exploration of self-inventory, surrender, trust, self-confidence, setting boundaries, affect, body language and behavior. As therapeutic teachers, horses help those with trauma move from surviving to thriving.

The Physical Practice of Yoga as Therapy

All forms of exercise and physical play not only improve the health of the body but also of the mind. The emotional pain that leads to addiction often involves a desensitizing and detachment from the physical self. The use of yoga in our therapy reflects our commitment to treating the whole person, body, mind, and spirit. Yoga and Mindfulness practice can reduce stress while training the mind to suspend self-criticism and judgment. The act of contemplation rather than reactivity and impulsivity can provide the client with new ways of thinking and behaving.

Expressive Art Therapy

Expressive Art Therapy has emerged as an effective therapeutic tool for healing. Sometimes pain and sadness are buried very deep, beyond where words can find them. Through the expression of drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art forms, feelings and thoughts are accessed and put into the artwork. The artistic creation opens another avenue toward self-knowledge and awareness.

The Malibu Program

When clients first arrive at Creative Care, they are greeted by a team of caring professionals. Within the first 48 hours of admission, each client receives a thorough clinical assessment, which includes meeting with the founder of Creative Care, fondly known as Dr. K, as well as the consulting psychiatrist, registered nurse, clinical director, therapist, counselor, and others. Our Clinical Treatment Team Meeting takes place twice a week, and each client is discussed in depth in order to adjust their treatment plan according to their progress.

The Calabasas Program

Creative Care Calabasas is set on a beautiful, wooded, one-acre property in Malibu Canyon. Beneath the treetop canopy of hundred year oak trees, the peaceful and intimate setting is perfect for clients struggling with mental health issues. Set between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica mountains, Creative Care Calabasas’ world-class facility provides nature trails and a tennis court.

Upon entrance to Creative Care Calabasas, clients are welcomed by a compassionate team of treatment professionals. Within the first 48 hours of admission, medical staff and clinicians assess each client. During that period each new client is engaged with every facet of the clinical team via a thorough clinical assessment, meeting with a consulting psychiatrist or nurse practitioner, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, therapists, counselors, and other staff members. Clients also meet with Program Director, Dr. Alexandra Edwards, who has been with Creative Care since 1997. Under the direction of Dr. Edwards, the Creative Care Clinical Treatment Team meets weekly to discuss each client in depth. With regular and frequent whole team communication, treatment plans are developed and adjusted according to staff observation and client involvement. While in treatment, each client will participate in a number of treatment activities and therapeutic programs for a comprehensive experience
