Yoga for the Treatment of Mental Health

Yoga at Creative Care

Mental health disorders affect every facet of the lives of those struggling with them, beyond low moods and troubling feelings or thoughts. For example, symptoms of depression include physical manifestations like unexplained aches and pains and fatigue. Anxiety also features fatigue, as well as muscle tensions and headaches. These physical symptoms exacerbate the emotional ones, sending the individual suffering from a mental health disorder into further distress. This synergy of dysfunction is why Creative Care champions a holistic, or “whole person” approach to mental health treatment. Yoga is one of the methods we use to relax and heal, modulating stress response systems and attending to the mind-body connection.

The Efficacy of Yoga in Mental Health Treatment

The rise in yoga’s popularity has led to an increase in studies examining the health benefits of yoga, including mental health. A study by Vollbehr et al revealed that yoga was an effective addition to traditional talk therapies in the treatment of chronic depression, with individuals reporting less depression, anxiety, and stress than those in a control group. Another study by van der Kolk et al found that yoga reduced symptoms of physiological arousal in PTSD patients. They believe that it improves emotional regulation, a necessary component of successful PTSD treatment, by enhancing somatic regulation and body awareness.
