Psychodynamic Therapy for the Treatment of Mental Health

Psychodynamic therapy is the foundation of modern therapy with years of research to support and hone its methods. It’s a form of talk therapy focusing on self-reflection and self-examination under the guidance of seasoned, compassionate mental health professionals. In sessions, clients begin to explore their emotions and the causes beneath them and unpack the intricate interpersonal dynamics of their lives.

Together, the client and therapist examine thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and early experiences to acquire insight into their current lives and mental health difficulties. With the therapist’s help, the client begins to see the unconscious motivations behind much of their dysfunctional behavior and how past experiences can affect the present. Illuminated by this knowledge, clients then begin to map out strategies for a new life of choice and engagement rather than reaction and isolation.

The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy has proven to be effective for a wide range of mental health disorders, from more common causes of depression and anxiety to personality disorders, which have a reputation for being difficult to treat. A 2004 meta-analysis by Leichsenring et al found psychodynamic therapy had an effect size of 1.17 in a change of target symptoms when treating various mental health disorders. In psychological research, 0.80 is considered a significant effect size. For comparison’s sake, the effect size of anti-depressants without therapy is 0.31. A 2003 meta-analysis by Leichsenring and Leibing found an effect size of 1.46 across 14 studies examining the use of psychodynamic therapy for personality disorders from pre-treatment to post-treatment. Decades of practice, study, and refinement have built a multifaceted and sophisticated theory of interpersonal dynamics from which psychodynamic therapy derives its success.
