Family Therapy at Creative Care
The effects of mental health disorders reach beyond the individuals suffering from them, affecting families, friends, and coworkers. Additionally, the intricate interpersonal dynamics that exist within a family can contribute to the difficulties of mental health conditions. Family therapy is a means to offer support to family struggling to cope and identify the roles and behavior patterns that can exacerbate mental health disorders. It’s a collaborative and inclusive process that allows families to productively express thoughts, feelings, and concerns in a safe and supportive environment. Family involvement and number of sessions varies from case to case, but through open dialogue and communication, Creative Care’s clinicians work closely with family members to determine the most effective and appropriate time to integrate family members into the treatment process.
There are a number of studies documenting both the effects that family functioning can have on mental health disorders as well as the efficacy of family therapy in improving that functioning. A 2007 study by Keitner et al found that poor family functioning had an adverse effect on short- and long-term recovery from depression. However, another study by Keitner et al revealed that depressive episodes can be shortened by improved family functioning. Meanwhile, a meta-analysis by Shadish and Baldwin indicated that cases including family therapy in their treatment fared better on average than 71% of those that received only standard services.
