Art Therapy for the Treatment of Mental Health

Art Therapy at Creative Care

Creative Care strives to establish a sense of security and support for the individuals we serve. We believe that person-centered care is essential to a successful and sustained recovery and that this begins with honoring the unique histories and experiences of each client. Art therapy is one of the means we employ to help our clients find their voice and express those thoughts and emotions that can be difficult to articulate in traditional talk therapy. Art therapy is particularly useful in treating clients with a history of trauma, as those events so often resist rational definition. Intuitive-based means of expression like that arts can be a powerful alternative to logical discourse in unearthing and understanding these experiences.

The Efficacy of Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Numerous academic studies tout the value of art therapy in mental health treatment. A study by Smeijsters and Cleven showed that art therapy effectively challenged and changed cognitive distortions – those learned and ingrained dysfunctional thought patterns that are a hallmark of mental health disorders. Meanwhile, Franks and Whitaker found that art therapy reduced positive symptom distress index scores in participants diagnosed with personality disorders. Art also promotes neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to restructure itself. This makes art therapy especially potent when combined with other forms of treatment, such as traditional talk therapy. As new neural connections are being forged, the lessons learned in other therapy sessions are able to take firm root.
