Activities groups at Creative Care are a chance to build community and practice newly learned strategies in a safe and supportive environment. A common element of all mental health conditions, from depression to schizophrenia, is a pervading sense of isolation and loneliness. Activities groups give clients a chance to bond with one another, helping them to find the common threads that let them know they don’t have to struggle alone anymore. They get to share their experiences and challenges without judgment and grow together as a team. It’s also a chance to practice some of the coping skills and other new behaviors they’ve learned. For example, the group may role-play a situation that would normally be triggering for some and provoke dysfunctional behavior. Rather than react as before, clients put into use the positive new strategies they’ve developed with their therapists until they become a habit.
We make a concerted effort to vary the types of activity groups we offer as they provide a safe change to the routine that’s necessary in mental health treatment. However, one of the common groups is check-in. Check-ins provide the client with an opportunity to practice self-awareness of their emotional states and the process of the growth they’ve experienced during their time at Creative Care. Other groups include educational classes to promote understanding of particular disorders and increase mental health awareness and arts-based sessions to encourage self-expression.
Creative Care offers activities groups as part of our holistic, “whole-person” approach to mental health treatment. No two clients are alike, and we honor the individual by tailoring each treatment plan with a blend of evidence-based strategies designed to give each client the best possible chance at a lasting recovery. For example, a personalized treatment plan may also include:
- Psychodynamic therapy
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Mindfulness interventions and meditation
- Psychological and diagnostic testing
- Family therapy
- Trauma therapy
- Attachment-based psychotherapy
- Dialectical behavior therapy
- Art therapy
Our fully equipped staff, including a consulting psychiatrist, psychotherapists, registered nurses, counselors, and other highly trained professionals, works as a team to get to the root of each client’s needs.
