Creative Care is about supporting all people from the LGBTQ+ community and we show love and respect to them.
June is International Pride Month when LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies gather to celebrate their true selves and bring awareness to the struggles that these individuals face in their daily lives. Despite progress, social and cultural stigmas surrounding individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ persist. These stigmas – whether enacted, including experiences of prejudice and victimization; felt, like the psychological impact of hiding one’s sexual orientation; or internalized, for example, LGBTQ+ individuals having negative feelings toward their own sexual identity – are all positively correlated with mental health issues. Furthermore, these stigmas create another barrier to treatment, preventing them from getting the help they need.
Reduce the statistics and increase the support
Statistically, people who identify as LGBTQ+ struggle with mental health far more often than those who identify as straight or cisgender. A 2015 survey found that individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ are twice as likely to suffer from a mental health condition than a person who identifies as straight. Furthermore, they are three times more likely to have a condition serious enough to affect their daily life activities. An estimated 20-30% of LGBTQ+ individuals also report abusing substances. Compare this to the 9% of the general population. Additionally, 38-65% of transgender individuals experience suicidal ideation.
Exacerbating these numbers are the barriers LGBTQ+ individuals face when seeking mental health treatment. Historically, homosexuality was considered by many to be a mental illness and LGBTQ+ individuals still suffer from the collective cultural trauma of electroshock and aversion therapies. Additionally, many of the LGBTQ+ commuinty, particularly those who live in rural areas, lack access to culturally responsive mental healthcare. As a result, they can have a difficult time trusting mental health professionals, and many have concerns that the provider will focus only on their sexual orientation or gender identity rather than their condition.
Creative Care recognizes the culture of LGBTQ+
Creative Care recognizes the culture of LGBTQ+ clients as integral to treatment planning and action. We also recognize that traditional approaches to psychotherapy have not always catered to the needs of this community. As a response, we have devised a strategy that compassionately incorporates all facets of the client’s sexual identity into treatment. We prioritize inclusivity and safety for all and encourage all clients to express themselves and trust the validation that will come in return.
Since 1989, we have helped hundreds of clients overcome their mental health difficulties with cutting-edge, compassionate care. Creative Care coordinates our services to treat each client holistically from admissions to aftercare.
Those services may include:
- Individual and group counseling
- Family or couples therapy
- Art therapy
- Nutrition group
- Equine group
- Yoga and other relaxation therapy
