Activities Groups for Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Co-occurring substance use disorders drive a wedge between the individual suffering from them and the rest of the world. When we’re engaging in problematic substance use, we strain and destroy the bonds between us and those who love and support us. We lose perspective on our lives and struggles until they seem so big, they overwhelm us. Activities Groups Dual Diagnosis are a chance to share our experiences with others who have walked similar paths. It’s a safe and supportive environment in which we can find the common threads that draw us together as a team and bring us out of the isolation that is such a pervasive part of co-occurring substance use disorders. And as we learn and grow, we get the opportunity to share those experiences as well – what has been working, what we have been having trouble with, hearing others’ solutions to similar problems, and offering our own.

Types of Activities Groups

Creative Care offers a variety of activity groups to give our clients a deep toolbox full of strategies and solutions for the problems they’ve faced as a result of co-occurring substance use disorders. For example, roleplaying groups are a chance to employ some of the approaches they’ve learned in their individual counseling sessions. Clients act out situations that have triggered them in the past and respond with the new coping skills they’ve developed with their therapists in a low-stress, judgment free group. Weekly check-ins, on the other hand, are an occasion to practice self-awareness of their emotional states and the process the growth they’ve experienced during their time at Creative Care. Other groups include educational classes to promote understanding of particular disorders and increase mental health awareness and arts-based sessions to encourage self-expression.
