Dual Diagnosis Treatment Program

The Dual Diagnosis Treatment Program

When clients first arrive at Creative Care’s PHP and Supportive Living Program, they are greeted by a full-team of competent professionals. Within the first 48 hours of admission, each client receives a thorough clinical assessment with Dr. Khaleghi, our founder and innovator who is more affectionately known as Dr. K. In the immediacy of their arrival, clients can also expect counsel from the psychiatrist, registered nurses, our clinical director, therapists, and any other conciliatory staff members.

The Creative Care Clinical Treatment Team Meeting takes place twice a week, during which time each client is discussed at length to explore his or her progression and suggest any amendments to their treatment plan based on the evolving clinical picture. While in treatment, clients will traverse through several stages of treatment. Their evolution through the various stages will be specific to each client, but all will be grounded in the Creative Care Clinical philosophy pioneered by Dr. K.

These stages and descriptions are affectionately listed below to help people better understand the treatment process.

PHP Treatment

At Creative Care, we know that each client walks a different path towards recovery. To honor these distinct paths, no two treatment plans are alike. Each client’s action plan is oriented around their specific needs, making each phase of treatment at Creative Care a highly-individualized process.

With such distinctions in mind, there are universal traits of treatment. More specifically, each client can expect to have three hour-long individual sessions with their primary therapist per week. Additionally, clients will have one individual session with their secondary counselor during the same period. Finally, dependent upon the individual’s needs, clients will meet with our psychiatrist up to three times per week.

Family members can also anticipate a weekly-scheduled time to speak to the primary therapist in addition to family therapy when indicated. Creative Care’s family therapy is integral to each client’s treatment plan and will be specific in its tailoring to the client and family unit respectively. In charting the proper course, family members will work with the client’s therapist to determine their own level of involvement including individual family sessions and group therapy attendance.

Creative Care believes in the tradition of the 12-step program as a guiding principle and framework for battling the chaos of addiction. The 12-step program is incorporated into the clinical program through daily 12-step meetings as well as clients receiving 12-step sponsorship. While some clients might desire alternatives to the 12-steps, the treatment team will still respectfully require participation in the 12-step program during all client’s time at Creative Care. Moreover, clients can discuss these interests with their individual therapist to augment the 12-step structure to find greater cohesion within the treatment system.

The nucleus of success at Creative Care emanates from the client-therapist relationship. Understanding the crucial nature of this relationship, Creative Care employs the most highly-trained and emotionally-efficient therapists in the field. Each and every therapist will have a rolodex of advanced therapeutic methods and treatment modalities exercised around the client’s individuated needs.

At Creative Care, the therapist is involved in the earliest and furthest reaching aspects of the client’s treatment experience ranging from individual sessions, family therapy, crisis management, to case management, legal issues, and beyond.

Throughout the course of all of this work, the therapist’s goal is to provide the proper diagnostic picture for their client. Through the creation of a diagnostic picture, the therapist can facilitate their client’s discovery of the internalized pain that has been masked by their addiction for years, decades, or even a lifetime. By unmasking the trauma, the client will begin to see their addiction for the problem and solution it always was and begin the healing process.

By understanding that such suppressed trauma was the true genesis of their addiction, the client can begin to take back the power stripped by their addiction. At this time, the therapist will address the need for alternative coping methodologies. More precisely, therapists will underline healthy coping mechanisms to help their clients survive the stressors of life without the crutch of self-medicating. Any co-occurring psychological disorders will be addressed at this time and physical activities will reinvigorate the body to match the uncovered mind.

Therapeutic approaches will include, but are not limited to:

Our modern structured supportive housing was created as an oasis for individuals who need extra support and accountability. We have 30 years of experience treating addiction as well as mental health conditions. In fact, we see addiction and mental health as two halves of the same whole. Additionally, we use mindfulness-based therapeutic treatment to teach our clients coping mechanisms and enable the management of mental health disorders for the greatest longevity in their recovery.

Multicultural Therapy at Creative Care

At Creative Care, we understand that culture matters. At Creative Care, we understand that culture matters as much inside of the therapeutic setting as it did in every client’s life before treatment. And what impacts the client matters to the clinician. With this spirit of inclusivity in mind, clinicians are trained to both self-reflect in order to understand their own conception of culture, then to consider how their own understanding might be different from others, and finally how these differences could show up in therapy.

Upon reflection and consideration, clinicians are prepared to meet each client and orient their action plan around these cultural nuances. Additionally, we invite each client to share their experiences and thoughts around the value of culture in their individual path to recovery.

More specific to how Creative Care integrates the multicultural approach: to begin with, we conceptualize a person’s attachment dynamics through the frame of the individual’s culture. This conceptualization is critical to the therapeutic process, given that attachment style frames the relationship habits for all of humanity-addiction or not. That is not to overstate the significance of the relationship, which is the relationship that an infant has with its primary caregiver, for it cannot be overstated. Next, our clinicians are primed to utilize cultural-responsiveness and person-centered care that grounds the therapeutic relationship. This process is as individualized for each client as it is steeped in cultural sensitivity.

At Creative Care, we recognize that symptoms can manifest, thus appear differently based on the dominant culture of the client. This recognition of cultural under pinnings will naturally impact the enation of treatment plans and any further personal needs that might appear throughout the treatment process. Finally, we aim to work within the culturally-congruent modalities to ensure client satisfaction.

LGBTQ-Affirming Therapy at Creative Care

At Creative Care, we recognize the culture of LGBTQ clients as integral to treatment planning and action. Moreover, the acceptance of LGBTQ as worthy of the highest level of care is innate to our mission: to create bridges and tear down walls. The walls that told these individuals that their sexual identity was subversive, rendering life a struggle. And addiction, a solution. The bridges to show the same people that there is another way.

At Creative Care, we recognize that traditional approaches to psychotherapy have not always catered to the needs of this community. But here, we know better. With compassion, we will devise a strategy that incorporates all facets of the client’s sexual identity into treatment. On these grounds, we say that Creative Care prioritizes inclusivity and safety for all. As per this orientation, we encourage all clients to express themselves and trust the validation that will come in return. We know that this is an exchange that might take some time to develop, but our clinicians and the full Creative Care team are prepared to go the distance with every client.

In addition, our group programming includes LGBTQ groups that will allow for individuals to share their struggles with others that might wear the same scars. While their concerns or experience within the community might vastly differ from their peers, they can all rely on the validation and affirmation for their life’s story within the walls of our home. Proudly at Creative Care, we also have clinicians that have taken the extra steps to become LGBTQ-affirming certified therapists.
