Dual Diagnosis Treatment and the Twelve Steps

Twelve Steps Meeting - Happy folks in a circle

When Creative Care accepted its first clients back in 1989, the mental health industry was still in the dark ages when it came to co-occurring disorders. Patients would go to separate doctors for their substance use and other mental health disorders, ignoring the interaction between the conditions. Our Doctors Morteza and Karen Khaleghi pioneered a dual diagnosis approach, treating both disorders concurrently and uncovering the suppressed trauma at their roots. Essentially, we see addiction as a symptom of a much deeper issue. Furthermore, just as we teach calming techniques to our clients suffering from anxiety disorders in order to manage their symptoms, Creative Care believes in the traditions and principles of twelve-step programs as a framework for battling the symptom of addiction. In fact, it is this component of our dual diagnosis treatment program that we’d like to take a closer look at today.

The Twelve Steps at Creative Care

Creative Care incorporates the twelve steps into the clinical program through daily meetings as well as sponsorship for clients. We understand that some clients might desire alternatives to this approach. However, we still respectfully require participation in the twelve-step program during all clients’ time at Creative Care. We see the program as a philosophically- and spiritually-rich method by which our clients can process some of their experiences. Furthermore, it is a program of action. Each of the twelve steps has a principle undergirding it and working the steps is an opportunity to practice these principles.

Getting Honest With Ourselves

For example, the first step of Alcoholics Anonymous reads, “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.” The principle behind this step is honesty and clients working this step learn that they must start being honest with themselves if they are to heal. Our clients begin by practicing honesty with their peers, sharing their stories in meetings and with their sponsors. This works synergistically with their treatment plans by setting the stage for the more difficult truths they will uncover in sessions with their therapist.

Innovative, Creative Care

Creative Care offers a safe, supportive environment in which our clients learn and practice the twelve steps. Meanwhile, our expertly trained therapists help clients uncover and process the trauma beneath their co-occurring substance use disorder. This is what we mean by treating the “whole person”. Furthermore, we coordinate our services to treat each client comprehensively from admissions to aftercare.

Additionally, services may include:

  • Individual and group counseling
  • Medications
  • Family or couples therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Nutrition group
  • Equine group
  • Yoga and other relaxation therapies

We work as a team to lead our clients to live a new life of happiness and fulfillment. If you or someone you love is suffering from a co-occurring substance use disorder, start the recovery process today. Call Creative Care at 855-954-0762.
