What Does “Dual Diagnosis” Mean?
For our readers unfamiliar with the term, “dual diagnosis” refers to a primary mental health condition, such as depression, with a co-occurring substance use disorder. These conditions are the result of a number of factors, including genetics and environmental history – particularly historical trauma, and are rather common. According to statistics provided by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.7% of American adults suffered from a dual diagnosis in 2020. That’s 17 million people. Moreover, almost 40% of individuals with any mental health condition and 48% of those suffering from a serious mental health condition reported using illicit drugs. Compare this to 17% of adults with no mental health condition reporting the same. This is often the result of an attempt to self-medicate. Furthermore, it leads to the disorders feeding one another and becoming inextricably bound. In conclusion, this highlights the need for a holistic, dual diagnosis approach.
