The Mental Health Treatment Program
Creative Care’s Mental Health Residential Treatment Program is grateful to call Calabasas home. Creative Care Calabasas is set on a beautifully- wooded, one-acre property in Malibu Canyon. Beneath the treetop canopy of centuries-old oak trees, the intimate setting is ideal for clients struggling with mental health issues. Cast between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica mountains, Creative Care Calabasas’ advanced campus provides the comforts of nature and the reassurance of serenity. Hiking trails through the winding hills and sporting facilities allow clients to slow the mind and reinvigorate the body all at once.
Upon entrance to Creative Care Calabasas, clients are welcomed by a well-trained and empathetic team of treatment professionals. Within the first 48 hours of admission, medical staff and clinicians assess each client. Clients will also meet with Program Director, Dr. Alexandra Edwards. Dr. Edwards, who has been a dedicated member of the Creative Care team since 1997, will not only offer vigilant support, but artful advisement to the full Clinical Treatment Team.
During earliest of treatment hours, each new client will be engaged with the clinical team via a thorough clinical assessment. Additionally, clients will promptly meet with the Creative Care Medical Team that entails a consulting psychiatrist, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, therapists, counselors, and other conciliatory staff members.
Under the direction of Dr. Edwards, the Creative Care Clinical Treatment Team meets weekly to take a deep-dive into the portrait and patterns of each client. With regular and frequent whole-team communication, treatment plans are developed under the tutelage of clinical advice.
Staff observation and client involvement create a dynamic clinical scheme with frequent feedback loop encouraged. While in treatment, each client will participate in a ladder of therapeutic programming punctuated by energetic activities number to ensure a comprehensive experience.
We at Creative Care understand that no two clients are alike. Each and every person has their own set of challenges and journey to recovery. The clinical team at Creative Care takes careful consideration in creating personalized treatment plans for each client and incorporating groups in which each client participates. Each client will have three individual sessions with his/her therapist every week, as well as one meeting with our psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner. We cater to each client’s individual needs and additional sessions are incorporated into client’s treatment based upon clinical review. Each client will also receive individual counseling and case management. When appropriate, family members will be invited to participate in the treatment process in weekly phone calls with the primary therapist and in family therapy sessions. Much like the individualized treatment plans, Creative Care’s family therapy program is tailored to each client and family. Through open dialogue and communication, Creative Care’s clinicians work closely with family members to determine the most effective and appropriate time to integrate family members into the treatment process.
Many of the clinicians at Creative Care have years of experience in working with clients suffering from mental health issues. Our therapists are highly experienced and trained in a wide variety of therapeutic modalities and approaches employing them all to best suit the needs of each individual client. Creative Care therapists are intimately involved in every aspect of the client treatment experience, ensuring a feeling of safety and security for each client through every facet of the process, from crisis management, family therapy, individual therapy sessions, legal issues, case management and more.
Multicultural Therapy at Creative Care
At Creative Care, we understand that culture matters. At Creative Care, we understand that culture matters as much inside of the therapeutic setting as it did in every client’s life before treatment. And what impacts the client matters to the clinician. With this spirit of inclusivity in mind, clinicians are trained to both self-reflect in order to understand their own conception of culture, then to consider how their own understanding might be different from others, and finally how these differences could show up in therapy.
Upon reflection and consideration, clinicians are prepared to meet each client and orient their action plan around these cultural nuances. Additionally, we invite each client to share their experiences and thoughts around the value of culture in their individual path to recovery.
More specific to how Creative Care integrates the multicultural approach: to begin with, we conceptualize a person’s attachment dynamics through the frame of the individual’s culture. This conceptualization is critical to the therapeutic process, given that attachment style frames the relationship habits for all of humanity-addiction or not. That is not to overstate the significance of the relationship, which is the relationship that an infant has with its primary caregiver, for it cannot be overstated. Next, our clinicians are primed to utilize cultural-responsiveness and person-centered care that grounds the therapeutic relationship. This process is as individualized for each client as it is steeped in cultural sensitivity.
At Creative Care, we recognize that symptoms can manifest, thus appear differently based on the dominant culture of the client. This recognition of cultural under pinnings will naturally impact the enation of treatment plans and any further personal needs that might appear throughout the treatment process. Finally, we aim to work within the culturally-congruent modalities to ensure client satisfaction.
LGBTQ-Affirming Therapy at Creative Care
At Creative Care, we recognize the culture of LGBTQ clients as integral to treatment planning and action. Moreover, the acceptance of LGBTQ as worthy of the highest level of care is innate to our mission: to create bridges and tear down walls. The walls that told these individuals that their sexual identity was subversive, rendering life a struggle. And addiction, a solution. The bridges to show the same people that there is another way.
At Creative Care, we recognize that traditionalapproaches to psychotherapy have not always catered to the needs of this community. But here, we know better. With compassion, we will devise a strategy that incorporates all facets of the client’s sexual identity into treatment. On these grounds, we say that Creative Care prioritizes inclusivity and safety for all. As per this orientation, we encourage all clients to express themselves and trust the validation that will come in return. We know that this is an exchange that might take some time to develop, but our clinicians and the full Creative Care team is prepared to go the distance with every client.
In addition, our group programming includes LGBTQ groups that will allow for individuals to share their struggles with others that might wear the same scars. While their concerns or experience within the community might vastly differ from their peers, they can all rely on the validation and affirmation for their life’s story within the walls of our home. Proudly at Creative Care, we also have clinicians that have taken the extra steps to become LGBTQ-affirming certified therapists.
