Over Three Decades of Clinical Excellence

Creative Care’s clinical excellence resides in the organization’s nearly 33 years of experience. Our foundation as an organization is built on psychoanalytic principles, specifically attachment-focused interventions, regulating environments, and needs-focused support for our Clients. Creative Care integrates its psychoanalytic conceptualizations with cognitive behavioral interventions and mindfulness resources. As a result, Clients get relief and support and achieve self-efficacy as they do the deeper work that includes trauma-based treatments. Steeped in years of experience and calibrated to the current evidence-based practices, Creative Care understands the most complex cases because of the attention to detail, the attunement to each individual Client, and unwavering compassion. This week, we’d like to delve a little deeper into what some of these clinical terms mean and how these approaches help our Clients on their journey to wellness.

A Psychoanalytic Framework

We’ll begin with the psychoanalytic framework, and in this aspect, our approach is heavily influenced by the work of Melanie Klein. Rather than emphasizing biological drives as in the Freudian model of psychoanalysis, Klein’s work focuses on patterns of interpersonal relationships. Particularly the early relationship between infant and mother. From this foundation, attachment-based therapy becomes particularly effective, rebuilding lost trust in a safe, supportive environment. At this point, Clients and therapists can begin to examine the problematic behaviors that resulted from these difficult early experiences and attachment issues. Behavioral modification therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and acceptance-commitment therapy are powerful means of recognizing triggers and developing positive coping skills in the place of maladaptive habits.

Neurophysiology and Trauma Treatment

As traumatic early experiences are central to so many mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and co-occurring substance use disorders, the staff at Creative Care has extensive training in a range of trauma-based treatments. We believe in treating trauma holistically. Specifically, we pay particular attention to the way traumatic experiences encode themselves in the body, hijacking neural response systems. Somatic therapies like EMDR are a means to realign physical responses with the rational mind. This helps to release the negative emotions stuck in the body.
