Innovative and Compassionate Clinical Excellence
Creative Care has provided innovative clinical excellence to those suffering from mental health conditions for over three decades. Established and managed by clinicians and psychoanalysts Morteza Khaleghi, PhD, LMFT, and Karen Khaleghi, PhD, Creative Care’s philosophy is to understand and process early experiences. Specifically, we unearth the underlying causes that manifest mental health difficulties throughout adulthood. One of the means by which we accomplish this is attachment-based therapy.
What is Attachment-Based Therapy?
Attachment-based therapy derives primarily from British psychologist John Bowlby‘s theory of attachment. Specifically, Bowlby believed that the bonds that we form in childhood to our caregivers have a tremendous impact on our lives. Indeed, those of us who had difficult childhoods – particularly those of us who were separated physically or emotionally from a caregiver – are at risk of developing dysfunctional behaviors that affect future relationships. In adults, these manifest mainly as either attachment anxiety or attachment avoidance. For example, attachment anxiety behaviors stem from a fear of rejection or abandonment. Additionally, it includes an excessive need for approval as well as a negative view of self. On the other hand, attachment avoidance springs from a fear of intimacy, which expresses itself through an excessive need for self-reliance and a negative view of others. Ultimately, both dimensions drive people into isolation and can lead to depression and anxiety.
How Does It Work?
Attachment-based therapy looks to develop and rebuild a client’s trust. Additionally, we want to allow them to express their emotions and communicate. The key here is the therapist and client relationship. For example, as this relationship grows and the client learns to trust their therapist, they can examine together the basis of their maladaptive behaviors. It’s demanding work that requires the therapist to honor the client’s individuality and history and fully experience their feelings. The therapist provides stability to ensure the client is feeling supported and understood. Once the client understands the roots of their behaviors and is able to recognize those behaviors that aren’t serving them, they can learn specific techniques to alter or overcome them.
