5 Questions to Ask a Prospective Mental Health Treatment Center

5 Questions to Ask a Prospective Mental Health Treatment Center

Navigating a Wide Range of Options

Making the decision to seek mental health treatment isn’t easy. Society has made plenty of advances over the past ten or twenty years. However, stigmas concerning mental health conditions persist. For example, many still equate depression with sadness. People suffering from it hear things like, “lighten up…other people have it worse”. Antiquated ideas like this present a significant barrier to treatment and overcoming them takes a lot of strength. However, the challenges don’t end once one makes a decision. There is a wide range of treatment options available. Navigating them can be confusing for those seeking help for the first time. To help these folks find the right mental health program to meet their needs, we have compiled a list of five questions to ask prospective treatment facilities.

Is the program licensed and/or accredited?

To ensure that standards of care are being met, there are a number of independent organizations that license and accredit treatment centers, like the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Creative Care has been CARF-accredited since our inception in 1989.

Does the treatment center build its approach upon evidence-based methods?

Be very careful when speaking with treatment centers offering brand-new and untested treatment methods. These often sound too good to be true, and in fact, they usually are. Methods we’ve discussed in our blogs such as cognitive behavioral therapy and the twelve-step approach have been studied extensively for years and proven to be effective.

Does the program prioritize helping the client meet their stated goals?

In other words, does the treatment center individualize its approach or does it offer a one-size-fits-all program? With compassion and integrity, Creative Care implements individualized treatment plans designed to assist clients in connecting the dots and improving their quality of life.

What levels of care does the facility offer?

Some treatment centers offer intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs requiring attendance to a set number of hours per week while others are offices offering outpatient visits. Creative Care is a residential treatment center, and our clients stay on-site at our facility in Calabasas, California.

What payment options are available?

Mental health treatment is a significant investment and it’s important to understand the costs and responsibilities prior to enrollment. Many health insurance plans offer mental health benefits. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will authorize the treatment a facility may offer. The admissions specialists will coordinate with the client and their insurance carrier to determine the limits of coverage and what out-of-pocket costs could be.

Innovative, Creative Care

This is by no means a comprehensive list of questions to ask a prospective mental health treatment center. However, it should give you an idea of some of the things you should keep in mind if you decide to seek treatment. Creative Care’s admissions team is ready to answer these and any other questions you may have. We want to make sure you’re enrolling in a program that will give you the best possible chance at a lasting recovery.
