Alcohol And Anxiety: Alcohol Aggravates Anxiety Symptoms

Alcohol and anxiety can be a treacherous combination. For years I struggled with binge drinking, social anxiety and panic attacks. They started in college; usually after a night of binge drinking. I never remembered passing out but I do remember waking up. My brain would be flooded with questions, “Where am I? What the hell did I do last night? Where’s my other shoe? Why is there puke all over my shirt? And whose puke is that?”

I felt an overwhelming sense of dread, my heart wouldn’t stop racing and I’d broke out in a cold sweat. I thought I was losing my mind. It didn’t stop there. I found myself consuming larger and larger amounts of alcohol whenever I was in a social situation. But the only problem was that when I started drinking, I didn’t know when or how to stop. As a result, my panic attacks increased. They we’re gaining in intensity to the point where they were difficult to handle. I began to lose control of my life to a certain extent and I was unable to focus my attention to where it needed to be focused. So, I drank more and had more anxiety attacks.

Anxiety disorders and alcohol dependence co-occur at an alarming rate. According to a recent report conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), about 20 percent of Americans with a current anxiety or mood disorder (such as depression) also have a current alcohol or other substance abuse disorder, and about 20 percent of those with a current alcohol/substance abuse disorder also have a current anxiety or mood disorder.

People with anxiety disorders are up to three times more likely to have an alcohol or other substance abuse disorder than those without an anxiety disorder. But, what begins as a way to cope with social anxiety can quickly have the opposite effect of increasing distress.

The good news is both anxiety and substance abuse are treatable conditions. For any of you that are currently using alcohol to appease your anxiety issues, please realize this not a cure. Luckily for me, my family and friends noticed my downward spiral into anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse. For more information on getting anxiety treatment and/or alcohol treatment, please don’t hesitate to contact us at Creative Care today.

Alternative Sentencing: Cooperation Rather Than Confrontation

Traditionally, alternative sentencing is a hard sell because the justice system is about confrontation rather than cooperation. Alternative sentencing provides an offender with the opportunity to get help for a substance abuse problem that contributed to their offense and should make them less likely to offend again.

The criminal justice system refers about 655,000 people every year for drug and alcohol rehab, which accounts for roughly 36 percent of all admissions. Most clients are under age 25, have never been in treatment before, and usually respond well to treatment. What may surprise you, though, is that alcohol is the number rated one drug of choice for individuals in treatment.

While court-ordered treatment is never pleasant, it is a golden opportunity to help the person develop a positive understanding of him/herself. Through a variety of traditional and non-traditional therapies and experiences, these individuals will have the opportunity to reclaim their personal dreams and goals awakening an authentic relationship with life.

Alternative Sentencing is a viable legal option instead of punishment. If you, your client, or someone you love has criminal charges pending against them due to drug or alcohol involvement, we may be able to help in minimizing jail time exposure while providing appropriate alcohol, drug, and/or behavioral health treatment. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at 1-800-832-3280 for more information on drug and alcohol treatment at Creative Care in Malibu, CA.

Get Help Recognizing The Signs And Symptoms Of Dual Diagnosis

The more you know about dual diagnosis, the more clearly you will be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of someone who is struggling with these life challenges, and perhaps help this individual to live a healthier or more fulfilling life.

Dual Diagnosis, also known as a co-occurring disorder, is used to describe a person who suffers from a psychiatric condition and a substance abuse problem. Dual diagnosis can be difficult to identify because the symptoms of one disorder often mimic the symptoms of the other disorder. Many of the symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse, such as extreme anxiety, depression, paranoia, delusions and hallucinations are nearly identical to symptoms of mental illness.

Dual diagnosis can cause a great deal of problems for the individual, the family and for friends. The consequences of these disabling conditions vary according to what addictions, disorders, pains or traumatic experiences are involved. The common signs and symptoms which arise out of the struggle with dual diagnosis include:

• Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, or helplessness
• Thoughts of death or suicide
• Increase or decrease in energy levels
• Sleep disturbances
• Poor performance at work or school
• Loss of interest in activities that were once pleasurable
• Difficulty with concentration or making decisions
• Changes in appetite
• Stealing from friends and family
• Increased agitation and/or restlessness
• Continuation of negative behavior despite known risks
• Change in Hygiene or grooming habits
• Distorted thinking
• Increased feeling of fear and/or anxiety

Acknowledgement of a dual diagnosis and/or a co-occurring disorder allows for awareness, understanding and the opportunity for change. If you or someone in your family is exhibiting any of the characteristics above, they may have a dual diagnosis and need to receive professional help immediately. For more information on dual diagnosis treatment, please contact us at Creative Care in Los Angeles, CA today.

The Importance Of Getting Treatment For Bipolar Disorder

Treatment for bipolar disorder can help you live life on your own terms, without the interference of mood swings. Effective bipolar disorder treatment relieves symptoms, reduces the frequency and intensity of manic and depressive episodes, and restores your ability to function.

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. From high to low. From mania to depression. From recklessness to listlessness. These symptoms are different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through from time to time.

People with bipolar disorder experience unusually intense emotional states that occur in distinct periods called "mood episodes." An overly joyful or overexcited state is called a manic episode, and an extremely sad or hopeless state is called a depressive episode. Sometimes, a mood episode includes symptoms of both mania and depression. People with bipolar disorder also may be explosive and irritable during a mood episode.

Bipolar disorder tends to worsen if it is not treated. Over time, a person may suffer more frequent and more severe episodes than when the illness first appeared. Also, delays in getting the correct diagnosis and treatment make a person more likely to experience personal, social, and work-related problems.

If you suspect that you or someone you know are suffering from bipolar disorder, seek help right away. The earlier you catch bipolar disorder and begin treating it, the better your chances of getting and staying well. An experienced bipolar disorder treatment center like Creative Care in Los Angeles, CA can get you the treatment you need. Hope starts with a phone call. 1-800-832-3280.

Denial In Drug And Alcohol Addiction Is A Serious Problem

Denial in drug and alcohol addiction is a serious problem. Drug and alcohol addiction can strike virtually anyone. Despite common stereotypes, it doesn't limit itself to a certain age, sex, race or socioeconomic status. This problem is especially challenging to deal with because many addicts/alcoholics get stuck in denial and refuse to admit their problem or the effects it is having on them and the people around them. By not admitting the problem, they can avoid facing the need to stop using the drugs.

Denial can be described as a way in which the mind refuses to accept a problem. It is a safety valve for handling stress. One way to handle an overwhelming problem that causes a great deal of fear is to deny that it exists. That belief can be so strong it is impossible to distinguish what is true and what is false.

Denial is so common among individuals who have become addicted to alcohol and other drugs that addiction has been referred to as the disease of denial. Indeed, people in recovery from substance abuse are typically surprised at the depth of their denial as it unfolds before them during the recovery process.

Denial can be the fatal aspect of addiction. This is true because it leaves the addict/alcoholic vulnerable to taking greater risks for longer periods of time. It impairs judgment and results in self-delusion, preventing the addict/alcoholic from seeing and understanding the implications and consequences of his or her behavior until it is too late. Even documented evidence to the contrary won't persuade the individual differently.

People honestly do not know when they are "in denial." It’s not that denial is invisible. It isn’t. We can often see denial as it occurs in other people; we just can't see it in ourselves. Do have a friend or family member who is currently in denial of their drug or alcohol addiction? Knowing the signs of denial could help you or someone you care for get their life on a healthy track. Cocaine Addiction Treatment

Drug addictions are difficult to overcome, and cocaine addiction is one of the most challenging. Cocaine addiction is a habit that has ruined millions of lives. Although it causes severe harm to the user, cocaine also affects the lives of others, including the user's family, friends and coworkers. In the United States, it is an especially large problem and to help those who suffer from it, there are cocaine treatment programs across the country.

Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that attacks the brain and central nervous system. The more it is used, the greater the addiction becomes. Cocaine addiction is created through both a physical and mental drug dependency. Use of cocaine over longer time periods has multiple health consequences; most dangerously it is associated with a lifetime risk of heart attack. Cocaine addiction treatment should be sought at the first signs of abuse.

The first step to truly overcoming your cocaine addiction is to explore the different options that are available to you regarding cocaine treatment. The truth, when it comes to cocaine treatment, is that there are a number of available options, and the best way to get help is to figure out which cocaine treatment option is going to meet your needs the best. When it comes to most forms of cocaine addiction, however, the best solution is to seek a long term, inpatient cocaine treatment, because this will result in a more thorough treatment and more support from physicians and counselors, which are keys to seeking cocaine treatment success.

Why Am I Depressed All the Time?

Depression is one of the most common health conditions in the world. Some people say that depression feels like a black curtain of despair coming down over their lives. Many people feel like they have no energy and can't concentrate. Others feel irritable all the time for no apparent reason. Depression isn't a weakness, nor is it something that you can simply "snap out of."

Unfortunately, it is not fully known what exactly causes depression. There are numerous theories about causes such as biological and genetic factors, environmental influences, and childhood or developmental events. However, it is generally believed that depression is most often caused by the influence of more than just one or two factors.

For instance, a person whose mother had recurrent major depression may have inherited a vulnerability to developing depression (genetic influence). This combined with how the person thinks about themselves (psychological influence) in response to the stress of going through a divorce (environmental influence), may put them at a greater risk for developing depression than someone who does not have such influences.

The first step in treating depression is recognizing that you are depressed. The second step is seeking help. If you are from the Houston, TX area and have a friend or a loved one is struggling with depression, please don’t hesitate to contact us today for depression treatment.

What is Dual Diagnosis?

A growing percentage of persons currently entering alcohol and drug rehab centers, are diagnosed with dual disorders. The term dual diagnosis refers to a person who has both an alcohol or drug problem and an emotional/psychiatric condition. These conditions occur together frequently.

According to the United States Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), in 2006 approximately 5.6 million adults aged 18 or older had both a mental health and substance use disorder. Almost half went untreated last year!

The most common of the co-occurring mental health disorders in alcohol or drug abuse are depression and bipolar disorders. For example, an individual may be diagnosed with both depression and alcohol dependency. Both illnesses affect an individual psychologically, physically, and socially. The term can cause confusion at times, since the term may lead people to believe there is only one other psychiatric illness in addition to the substance abuse or dependency issues, whereas there may be multiple mental health issues.

If you or someone you love is suffering from drug or alcohol addiction and mood disorder, finding help sooner rather than later can help alleviate the effects of the disorders. If you would like more information about our dual diagnosis program, contact us at Creative Care.
